How to care for your Fuchsia

Use these instructions to care for an Fuchsia. This guide will tell you how to water an Fuchsia; its light, temperature, humidity preferences and any additional care it might need to help it grow.

Fuchsia

Light

Outdoors, the fuchsia plant thrives in a bright but shaded area. It can tolerate a few hours of morning sun, but avoid exposure to direct sun in the afternoon. As an indoor plant, keep your fuchsia in bright indirect sunlight.

Water

Your Fuchsia is ready for watering when the soil volume is 25% dry. Remember not to allow the soil to go completely dry since Fuchsias like moist (not soggy) soil. If you keep your Fuchsia hanging indoors, you might need to water it daily, or check the soil on a daily basis to ensure that your plant gets enough hydration.

Humidity

Fuchsias enjoy high humidity. Place a humidifier nearby or use a pebble tray. You can group your Fuchsia with other plants that love atmospheric moisture.

Temperature

The Fuchsia plant enjoys temperatures between 55-80°F. Although some varieties can tolerate cooler temperatures, you might beware of fluctuations and keep your plant away from drafts and vents.

Food

Fertilize your fuchsia plant once per month beginning in the early spring through the summer and early fall. Once the plant begins to bud, you can switch over to “bloom” formula fertilizers. No fertilizer is needed in the fall and winter seasons when growth slows.

Toxicity

Fuchsias are non toxic to humans and pets

AdditionalCare

The fuchsia plant is susceptible to pests, such as aphids or spider mites. Check your plant regularly for any signs of pests. Infestations may be treated with Insecticidal Soap or Neem Oil to help keep pests at bay, following the directions on the label.

What's a Fuchsia?

Botanical Classification: Fuchsia ssp.

About

Native to Central and South America, the fuchsia plant grows abundantly in the Andes where the air is cool but moist. The fuchsia plant comes in many different varieties and colors. Many varieties have beautiful multi-colored blossoms that hang or droop from the plant. There are two parts to the fuchsia’s blooms that are almost always two different colors. This gives them a unique and graceful look.

Fuchsias are very easy to care for and require minimal maintenance. However, if you live in a very hot climate you might need to pay more attention to them. During hot summer days, the fuchsia plant loves regular watering and a spot in the shade. As an indoor plant, it will be happiest in an area with bright, indirect light and out of the way of air vents and drafty windows.

Fun Fact

Depending on the fuchsia’s exposure to the sun, its leaves can change color. The foliage can appear more golden in the sunshine, and more green in the shade. Too much sun can damage the leaves, so limit its exposure to a few hours of direct sunlight in the morning only.
